Motion Animation

A company called Image Metrics has caught my eyes the other day, I had seen a video a couple of years ago of an advertising of subscription plan by a couple of actors of an old TV show. The product was new but the actors were long gone… That’s the wonder of “Motion Capture”. The company could realize this by using some pointers on the faces of actors and then reproduce the movements of those pointers on a 3D face that would then be super-imposed on the original animation.

Think of religion as a movie…

Some time ago I was trying to remember an excellent explanation of the main religions to my girlfriend. It involved movies and sequels, I was finally able to find it back (Internet is wonderful place):

“Think of it like a movie. The Torah is the first one, and the New Testament is the sequel. Then the Qu’ran comes out, ant if retcons (Retroactive continuity) the last one like it never happened. There’s still Jesus, but he’s not the main character anymore, and the messiah hasn’t shown up yet.

Jews like the first movies but ignored the sequels, Christians think you need to watch the first two, but the third movie doesn’t count, Moslems think the third one was the best, and Mormons liked the second so much they started writing fan fiction that doesn’t fit with any of the series canon.”

It’s a bit of a shortcut but it sums it up enough to make it understandable to a neophyte.

Best wishes for 2010!

That is it, we have passed a new year and and entered a new decade. I could not help but wonder if we would get the same outcome as in the movie 2010 and end up with a second sun above our head… that would give the perfect and irrefutable argument for global warming ;-)

Anyway, I hope you all had a brilliant time celebrating!

First Snow in Brussels

I was sitting with my back against the window working peacefully on my computer when a colleague sitting in front of me looked past me then sat up and went to have a look at the window behind me. The snow had arrive to Brussels and everybody stated to take a break to have a look. You cannot take away that amazing childish feeling of fun when you see snow falling and covering everything in white coat.

So I took my phone a decided to take a picture…

Snow in Brussels

Of course getting out to get something to eat people started stating the fact that snow is cold, wet and sticks to your clothes.  But I don’t care, I still like it :-)

Glass User Manual

I have the habbit of using water straight from the tap to brush my teeth, something that I have done for years and thought completely natural. This was until I notice that there is a glass in the bathroom that my girllfriend put there when she moved in, and I thought I would ask her what the glass is for. This is the note she left for me.

I love her :-)

Looking at gardens

Some things in life can have a dramatic impact on the way you look at the world around you. I will take the case of the latest event that happened to me quite recently. We have been looking for the last few months for a house to rent. The place had to please both my girlfriend and I and it was the first time that we were looking for something serious together (holidays destinations don’t count).

Among the conditions were such requests as a fireplace, just outside the capital city, a garage, a kitchen that has or can have a dishwasher, storage place and of course a garden. I will not list them whole here because that is not the point and it would bore you anyway. The very important thing that even if it is just a place to rent, it was very clear from the beginning that the house had to have a “soul” or something close to that idea.

How my website does looks on a Mobile device?

It has been a little bit more than half a year since I have decided to implement a specific template to be used on mobile devices such as a cell phone or a Smartphone, etc. Unfortunately I never had the chance to check what the result would be like on all of them and certainly know if it was a satisfactory result comparing to what I have on my iPhone for example.
Luckily I’ve had the change to stubble upon a site that happens to be specialized in this sort of question and runs a test of your web site to see if it is ok to browse it on a simple phone. And here is the score I got:
MobileScore
I must say that I am quite happy; since this was not the aim of the site in the first place I was quite glad to see the result.
So there you go, you can even read me on the subway, in a park or on a plane… well… maybe.

The fear of big brother

We all have thought, hear or read at length the possible idea that the government or some hidden company would eventually be overlooking everything we do and know more about us than what we would like them to. The protection of law is the illustration that we do not want this to happen and have a firm opinion on what the establishment (private or public) should and shouldn’t know about us. However I have recently discovered that it is very difficult to judge what is and isn’t already publicly available with or without our consent.

I am of course referring to the biggest information network that has, in the recent years, been gathering data in the form of blogs, social networks, messaging systems that have been slowly introduced into our daily life. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the improvements of communication flow, even if it is not always for the best. But there are some hidden aspects of this electronic distribution that I would like to share with you. I will try to split them is sections that I thought were appropriate. More >

Are Pirates Kept at Bay?

For those of you who have no clue about torrents and all the piracy issues that has been the subject of some reports in the media lately, you should read the next paragraphs; for those of us already in the knowing, just skip them.

Since the very beginning of the internet, people have been using it to distribute illegal material. It was much handier and cheaper than copying and distributing disks with application, pictures or any documents. But unless you were a tech savvy geeky student, you wouldn’t even know that this was happening right under your nose.
